Asar von Prehn, hands down my favourite side-character in Traces of Chaos. I love all of them, but I love von Prehn most.
Too bad I have such a tough time drawing her. Here I tried to work out the kinks in the design of General von Prehn’s prosthestic exoskeleton and the uniform she tends to wear over it. Not quite satisfied with it yet; that stuff is hard to design, especially since their world’s technology is a bit better than what we have today.
But I’m very happy with her face – it’s hard to make a character’s face look realistic old but not cartoony-silly old. It appears the trick (for me) is to design the younger version first and then approximate the aging process.
On the sketch itself: This is much closer to the normal look of my sketches, compared to the more eloberate pencil works I did during my vacation.
Drawing the younger self first, then an age-progression? Nice idea! (Fun to tinker with)
I think my knowledge on age progression (or its optical indicators) is rather limited though. All I know is:
- height decrease (as the skeleton shrinks/’crumbles’)
- wrinkles
- leathery skin (if you want to ‘overdo’ it)
- hanging/floppy muscles/body fat (most common example: breasts; but should be applied to other body parts too)
- less hair
- bigger noses and ears (those are the only body parts which keep growing even at higher ages – a fact the still amuses me)
- foggy eyes (not necessarily though)
Do I miss something else?
Lips get smaller & thinner, chin gets bigger.
I dunno what you mean by foggy eyes, but the upper eyelids tend to sag – and they get crowfeets. :)
Foggy eyes = Cataracts, maybe?

You know my prediliction for tech art, and therefore I love Ms. von Prehn already. :)
I really look forward to seeing her in colour. Would be very interesting. :)
She appears in Chapter 2 actually, so you don’t have to wait too long.
Wheeee! :D

Yes, I meant hazy iris/cornea. I’m not sure if those symptoms apply for the cataract disease only – I tend to associate them with age progression.
Ah, I see. Well, good that we had the same idea. :)
As far as I know that’s cateract only.
My grandmother has it, my grandfather who’s got no cateract doesn’t. So milage may vary?
