People hate swotters. Now I know why. Yes, I am a little bit slow on the uptake1. And yes I used to be one. Let me just say:
YARGH!
No wonder my schoolmates abused me, if I made them feel like that.
Funny thing is, I wouldn’t have minded being treated that way a year ago. That’s the problem with growing a spine: You suddenly become very much aware that certain things annoy you.

- EDIT: With understanding why people hate swotters. Otherwise I learn pretty quickly, actually. ↩
Swotter?
I’m not quite party to the context of this post but I value and admire cleverness – I just don’t think somebody else either working hard or being, under some circumstances, better at something than you should necessarily are lead you to feel about yourself – and if it *does* the problem is with you, not then.
@Kao
you might know them as eager beaver, striver or careerist – the German word’s “Streber” and slang like that is always hard to explain.
@tam
Yes, but swotters aren’t about working hard or being clever, but about SHOWING OFF how hard they work and how clever they are. And always dropping subtle hints about how everybody else sucks.
The work-force /schoolmate equivalent of the epeen, you know? Like the DPS constantly linking recount.
“I’ve worked 14 hours overtime this week, how much did you do, huh huh? Oh, only seven? Did you even get all your tasks done?”
I gotcha now. Yeah, I’ve known a couple people like that.
Also sounds like Topper from the Dilbert comic strip. (We have one of these in my department.) No matter what you have done, he/she has done it better, faster, etc.
Which in itself wouldn’t be much of a problem (and actually something to cheer for), but then they go out of their way to make sure YOU know how much you suck compared to them. XD
I don’t think that’s swotting, I think that’s being a dickhead :P
Hahahahaha. THAT too. XD I think you need to be a dickhead in order to swott – compared to just striving/working hard.
But that might just be Wortklaubereien – hair-splitting at it’s finest. :)
And yes, I used to be a dick in school…
